A New Landscape Landmark and District Core Befitting a Transforming City

Vanke Jisheng Central Park Development is unique in that its ratio of landscape open space is three times that of traditional enclosed retail malls. The generous allowance of open space and rich programming dictates and enriches visitors’ experience, as well as their spatial perception. This new type of functional landscape space is a vessel for an artistic atmosphere embodying a green waterfront, interactive installations, family-oriented and sports-oriented activities enriching daily lives of the neighborhood.

Vanke Jisheng Central Park stood out from the 163 shopping malls (over 30,000 square meters) that opened in China from January to May, by prioritizing the experiential value of landscape open space, thereby achieving an unprecedented average daily visitor of 40,000+ on every weekend since its opening, as well as an astonishing 270,000 visitors on opening day. Visitors’ increasing stay duration in open space, in turn, gradually transformed this unique place into a new shared public space for the neighborhood.

A Romantic Landscape Landmark - Foliage in the Urban Backyard

It is truly a luxury to enjoy the leisure of the backyard in an urban core. Our vision is to create an intimate urban landmark and open space, which led to the theme of “community of colorful foliage” – over 10 giant leaf-formed sculptures growing out of its epicenter, winding, flowing and becoming a landmark, allowing all inhabitants to enjoy this vibrant sight in relaxation.

Landscape Planning that Integrates Diverse Programs in Three Districts

Based on the commercial use characteristics and concept of giant urban foliages spreading its life outwards towards the various open spaces, the design team created a multitude of distinct activity spaces and features catering to multiracial residents enabling community, family, art and culture activities and energies while leisurely spend time as they please. Between these sculptural leaves are sculptural features, sports zones and gathering areas, interactive landforms for children and adults alike, encouraging integration and space sharing across demographic groups.

Landscape Programing and Zoning

The masterplan contains the eastern core plaza, the corridors and east-west link bridge, and the western waterfront space on the west side:

The core plaza to the north is not only a gateway to the project, but also an urban landmark. At this main entrance, we place the waving leaves and the giant butterfly art piece as the first impression of entering the plaza.

The central dynamic axis intersection contains another piece of leaf with a water-recreation theme. The water gushes from the vein of the leave-formed fountain from time to time, forming a maze. In addition to children’s playground, this are also serves as the activity square for the community. The southernmost area is matched the demand on the after-school education function, carrying the mixed age activities on the hill. The multifunctional series of foliages seamlessly connect the atmospheric theme from north to south.

The waterfront as a natural resource bonds the two commercial areas of the east and the west. Two eucalyptus leaves, which are elegantly traversed on the both sides of the river, links up the separated circulation. The 400-meter-long waterfront then became a new landmark and a stream of residents gathering by it. The rhythm of the palm leaf is divided into two directions to face the light and enrich the shadow change and expression on the facade and the user’s experience.

Water quality improvement and river restoration are also the key challenges for upgrading the waterfront. In addition to the overall design, incorporating the theme of the colorful foliage, our client’s commercial leasing team has also been involved in the river rectification. Through nano-aeration and planted floating island, the self-repairing and self-purification ability of the water ecosystem will gradually improve.

Located in Panyu’s city center where multiple subway lines converge, the 3.88 hectare landscape space contains over 400 meters of waterfront, river restoration and ecological remediation, bridge design in conjunction with pedestrian flow planning, landmark sculptures, and a supersized central commercial plaza 180mx50m in size. The design realized the vision of park-like commercial planning, while seamlessly interlocking with daily lives of local residents, thereby becoming the vessel of a transformed urban expression. With auxiliary urban core functions such as apartment housing, office and retail, Vanke Jisheng Central Park has been established and will continue to be the most important open space landmark of the city.

We are thrilled to see local residents inhabiting the vibrant foliage-inspired landscape as Panyu, ancient urban center of Guangzhou, now rejuvenated with a newly crafted and transforming living being that is full of potential. This project grasped the energy of urban transformation and created a locally befitting cultural destination at the most conspicuous location.
